Sam Heughan, a Scottish actor who plays the lead role of Jamie Fraser. He was born in New Galloway, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, on 30 April 1980. He is best known for Doctors and River City.

He studied acting at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) in Glasgow. In January 2012 whilst portraying Batman in a multi-million-pound stage production he gained considerable notoriety for making a citizen’s arrest. Sam posted “Browsing in HMV. Thief tries to steal DVDs. Bouncer stops him. Thief decides to fight bouncer. Then me. I threw him, then held him down. I left when cops arrived. Beat that status update.”

He was nominated for a 2003 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Most Promising Newcomer of 2002 for his performance in Outlying Islands performed at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs.

STARZ officially confirmed Sam Heughan's casting as Jaime Fraser on July 9, 2013 and by mid-July Outlander fans had started describing his fans as Heughligans[1]. The first Sam Heughan Fansite emerged July 18 using the newly coined name, Heughligans. Even before the official announcement, July 6, the books author Diana Gabaldon said "Sam Heughan showed up and he was Jamie" shortly followed by "That man is a Scot to the bone and Jamie Fraser to the heart… having seen Sam Heughan not just act, but be Jamie. I feel immensely grateful to the production team for their painstaking attention to the soul of the story and characters."
